Qingdao Wins Opening Stage of Clipper Round the World Yacht Race

新农村商报网9月10日讯   China’s Sailing City of Qingdao is second in the overall standings after coming third in the first race of the Clipper 2019-20 Round the World Yacht Race from London, UK, to Portim?o in Portugal.

中国帆船之都青岛号在2019-20赛季克利伯环球帆船赛第一赛段（英国伦敦至葡萄牙波尔蒂芒）取得了第三名，目前总成绩位列第二。

Qingdao crossed the finish line next to Marina de Portimão at 02:26:00 UTC, finishing the 1,200 nautical mile race in just over six days. 

世界标准时间02:26:00，青岛号穿过波尔蒂芒附近的终点线，在短短六天内完成了1,200海里的赛程。

The finish to the race to Portimão was thrilling. Despite leading for much of the race Qingdao encountered light winds off the coast of Portugal and fell back in the standings. Showing great skill and courage, the team refused to give up and fought back to take third place behind race winners Punta del Este and Dare To Lead. As well as collecting eleven points for winning the race, Qingdao also collected three bonus points for being the first to cross the Scoring Gate.

Skipper Chris Brooks said: “It was epic, hard work. We tried everything we could and it was just mother nature in the end that didn’t allow it to happen. It’s great to come third, I think it is a good foundation for Qingdao to go off and win the race.”

Making the achievement all the more incredible, all the crew aboard Qingdao are non-professional sailors, with some never sailing before beginning their Clipper Race training. The Clipper Race is the only event raced by non-professionals, with 700 people from 43 nationalities taking part in the eleven month race on board the fleet of eleven 70-foot ocean racing yachts.

There are nine different nationalities in the Qingdao team, with the crew aged between 23 and 72 years of age. There are also ten Ambassador Crew representing the city of Qingdao. Yi Zheng is completing the full circumnavigation, while Sun Simou is taking part in Leg 1. The Ambassador crew programme is designed to help promote China’s Sailing City as well as encourage more people to take up sailing. Past Qingdao Ambassador crew include Vicky Song, the first Chinese woman to sail around the world.

青岛号的船员来自9个国家，船员年龄在23至72岁之间。其中还有十位代表青岛市的大使船员。大使船员郑毅将进行环球航行，而大使船员孙思谋正在参加第一赛程。大使船员计划旨在宣传推广中国帆船之都，同时鼓励更多人参与帆船运动。在之前的青岛大使队员中还包括宋坤，她是第一位完成环球航行的中国女性。

Qingdao is the longest serving Team and Host Port Partner in the 23 year history of the Clipper Race, with the 2019-20 edition the eighth for China’s Sailing City. The Clipper Race fleet will arrive in Qingdao in March 2020, with the city’s welcome famous for its warmth and vibrancy.

青岛号是克利伯环球帆船赛23年历史上参赛时间最长的船队，青岛也是克利伯合作时间最长的停靠港，2019-20赛季是帆船之都青岛号第八次参赛。克利伯参赛船队将于2020年3月抵达青岛这座以热情与活力的闻名的城市。

The Clipper Race teams will spend a week in Portim?o. Marina de Portimao is hosting a rally on Thursday 12 September, with four Clipper Race teams racing from the city to Lagos and back.  Yachts will be visible from the shoreline along the coast, providing a spectacle for spectators to enjoy. The Clipper Race will be departing Marina de Portim?o on Sunday 15 September, with a parade of sail, showing off the magnificent 70 foot racing yachts in all their glory.

The second race of the circumnavigation will see the first ocean crossing for crew. Teams will be racing 5,195 nautical miles to Host Port Punta del Este in Uruguay.
