天卫十六由Brett Gladman， Phil Nicholson， Joseph Burns，和 JJ Kavelaars（加拿大理论天文研究所和康奈尔大学）用200英寸的海尔望远镜发现的，1997年9月6日和7日首次拍摄了卫星图片。一同发现的还有S/1997 U 2（ Sycorax）。

传统上所有天王星卫星的英语名字都是以威廉·莎士比亚或亚历山大·蒲柏的作品中的人物的名称来命名的，这个传统是从约翰·赫谢尔开始的一直延用至今。
